National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a scheme that provides support to eligible individuals with significant physical and / or mental disabilities. This includes supporting their families and carers.

People with disabilities who are registered with NDIS are called “Participants”. These participants must satisfy NDIS of their eligibility through various assessment processes to obtain support. The primary goal is to make its participants confident, socially engaged, autonomous and productive citizens.

NDIS helps its participants gain access to mainstream services and supports. It provides facilities to access a variety of community services. NDIS provides funds collected through a range of sources to provide reasonable and core services to people suffering from a disability. They have different packaged services to make its participants independent, educated, healthy, employed and actively involved in the community.

The approach taken by NDIS for the participants is to gain lifetime outcomes for the rest of their life. Australians from all community or ethnic backgrounds can be assured that their family members or relatives who have significant temporary and permanent disabilities will receive proper planned support from NDIS. It is expected that nearly half a million of Australians with disabilities will individually be benefited when NDIS is fully implemented. Along with service groups, NDIS also provides individually tailored combined service packages to support the participants.

NDIS was established under National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013 (NDIS Act). All policies and operation process details are made under the jurisdiction of this Act. The main objectives are to support participants to become independent and enable them to be socially engaged, as well as providing reasonable support services in a range of daily activities.

National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)

National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is an independent government agency. This agency implements packaged support services to Australians with specific temporary, or permanent disabilities through independent registered service providers. This agency also provides assistance to those who provide support services to individuals suffering from disabilities. This may include family members who care for their physically or mentally disabled members or paid carers.

NDIA looks after NDIS – which is a national scheme for people with disabilities to deliver its support services. NDIA aims to empower individuals with mental and physical disabilities to allow them to become confident citizens. It also incorporates clear and transparent policies to independent disability service providers, for the purpose of allowing them to continue growing to support individuals in need. They provide information, resources and networking facilities to the participants. Various resources, service plans, activity guidelines can be obtained by registered service providers.

NDIA operates its activities through NDIS which is funded by Government and independent Australian donors. Their goal is to raise community awareness to include people with disabilities to mainstream services, community and civic events, and government initiatives.
